Reasons to Choose Massage Therapy as a Career
Choosing a career is an important life decision. When considering the options, you want to find something that fits your personality, works with your lifestyle, and will be rewarding. Making the right career choice can mean the difference between loving or dreading going to work every day; when you spend 40 hours a week working, you can’t afford to hate your job.
Many are finding massage therapy to be a great career choice for multiple reasons. Here’s some of the reasons that we think make it a great career choice:
Helping Others
Whether it’s relaxation or healing, massage therapy can help people feel better. Massage can help increase overall health and balance within the body and as a massage therapist, you can be an instrument in this process. Knowing that you are playing a role in helping people release stress and feeling better about their health can be extremely rewarding. If you’re the type of person who enjoys helping others, massage therapy may be a great fit.
Career Flexibility
Flexibility is something that many other career choices lack. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to get stuck working the mundane 9-5, massage can be a great solution. Once you graduate from massage therapy school, you can find very flexible work as a massage therapist. There is a wide variety of places to work and scheduling possibilities as a massage therapist. It can be a great career choice for people who want to make a living while still having time to do other things that they love.
Another nice perk is that an education in massage therapy can be just as flexible. You can choose from a variety of class schedules at San Francisco School of Massage & Bodywork. Days, nights, weekends – find a class schedule that you can make work.
Work Environment
Many people have experienced working in a less than ideal environment. With massage therapy, this can be much less of a concern. One of the main goals of massage therapy is to take people from the high stress of daily life to an atmosphere where they can relax and release tension. Imagine working in an atmosphere where the main goal is to reduce stress and increase relaxation. That’s what certified massage therapists do every day!
Great Opportunity
The massage industry is in a very exciting phase. The benefits of massage are becoming more well-known and people need those benefits more than ever in the busy world we live in. People need massage more than ever and this is great news if you are considering a career as a massage therapist. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the massage industry is growing much faster than average. It is estimated to grow 22% by 2024 compared to 7% for all other occupations. So if industry growth is something that you look at when considering which career path you should take, massage therapy might be an attractive option.
Concerned About Changing Careers?
While massage is an enticing career prospect for many people, there are a few common concerns that come up. Here are some tips and tricks to help lay those concerns to rest.
It’s Too Late for Me to Change Careers
Sometimes people think it’s too late to make a career change, but it’s never too late to start building a career as a massage therapist. You can finish school and start working in the massage industry in as little as six months. This means you can switch from your monotonous job to a rewarding career in massage without skipping a beat.
How Do I Choose the Right School?

The fact that modern medical fraternity is fast taking notice of the benefits of massage therapy in managing many life threatening ailments, is opening new doors in this profession. Almost all major hospitals have licensed and specialized therapists and maintain that they still are short of the good ones, so this makes this field lucrative for all those aspirants out there.
My sister has been looking for a good therapeutic massage school. I’m glad you talked about how for massage therapy, you want a good education. I’m going to have to look for a good therapeutic massage and see what we can find!

Thanks for this great information. I love massage so much I became a massage therapist. Massage can heal your tissue and help to relax your body and mind. That’s why everybody visits spa and salon.
It was my kid’s dream to be a massage therapist. I Also Love Massage and massage chairs.
I have been thinking about going for a therapeutic massage for a little while now. This would be nice for me but I want to make sure that I get the best massage. Checking the school that they went to and choose would be a great way to pick a therapist.
Thanks for pointing out that being a massage therapist allows a lot of flexibility in your career. My daughter is about to graduate high school. She’s said multiple times that she wants a career where she can travel and be her own boss. I hadn’t realized that massage therapy offers both of these things! I’ll definitely talk to my daughter soon and see what she thinks of the idea!
You’re welcome! If she is planning on traveling, you should know that each state has its own requirements. You can check out the requirements in each of the states HERE. Knowing the requirements in where ever she hopes to land will help in making a choice of training programs. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing the useful information. It is really a great blog.
Massage therapy can go down in the books as a healing art, but all art is healing on some level.
I am thinking about becoming a massage therapist but I don’t know much about it and I want to make sure that I choose a good school to get trained at! You make a great point that you should tour different education facilities and sit in on some classes because this will give me an idea of the quality of the teaching and how hands-on it is. Also, I love that you say being a massage therapist allows you to have a flexible career because I have two young kids, so I have limited hours when I can work.
I like that you mentioned that there are more opportunities for this kind of career since the world today is embracing the benefits of massage. I guess I will suggest this career path to my best friend because she has been really confused about the life she wants to lead. This will not just make her successful, it might also give her purpose in life by helping people heal.
Thanks for the tip to contact different schools and see if we can sit in on a class to help us decide. My younger sister is currently evaluating her career options, and I think she’ll probably end up choosing massage therapy because she seems passionate about it. I’m glad I read your article because now I can share your advice and make it easier for her to choose the right college.
I love massage! Thank you for sharing ‘reasons-to-choose-massage-therapy’.
My back has been killing me recently. I think the issue is that I haven’t been maintaining good posture at work and sometimes I don’t lift the proper way. Your information that massage therapists don’t necessarily need to work 9-5 makes me wonder if I could find someone for my back that can meet after work. I’ll start looking into practitioners offering remedial massage in my area.
Thanks for explaining that massage allows us to focus on our own needs, which is especially helpful if we’ve been overworked. Lately I’ve been feeling really stressed out from planning a big event at work, so I’ve been looking online for ways to treat myself and help me relax. I’m glad I read your article because you helped me understand why getting a therapeutic massage would be worth the cost!
I like that you said that massages can help increase your overall health and balance your body. My friend told me that lately he has been dealing with a lot of stress and he is thinking of getting a massage. Thank you for helping me know the benefits of getting a massage.
It indeed is a noble job
